Born
on January 31st 1950, Wuhan China, Mr. Shen began to work in a factory in June
1970. In 1971, his works were published and he began to participate in art exhibitions.
His works include oil paintings, pic-ture posters, Chinese paintings, New Year
pictures and picture-story books. "Do not Forget the Past", the oil
painting created in 1972, had an enormous social effect. In 1979, he became a
member of the Association of Artists of Hubei. Mr. Shen entered the
Electronic Education Center at Huazhong Normal University in May 1980, with a
specified duty as an artistic designer. At the time, he focused on picture-story
book creations. Besides obtaining orders from many provincial publishing houses
all over China, he also had his works published on national professional periodicals
as "Picture- Story Pictorial" and "China Picture-Story", which
made him a famous Chinese illustrator. In 1984, he participated in the
Sixth National Fine Art Exhibition, which is of the highest level in China. Invited
by Zhejiang Peoples Fine Art Publishing House that same year,
he participated in the edition work of "World Literary Master-pieces"
series where he drew a piece titled "Chameleon". This entire series
won three national awards of the highest level: The Special Golden Award of the
First Chinese Excellent Fine Art Books (1980-1990), The First Class Award of the
Fifth Chinese Books Award and The First Class Award of the Fourth National Picture-Story
Books Series. From 1984 to 1986, he was an editor for "Changjiang
Literary and Art", a literary periodical and then moved on to the Hubei Fine
Art Publishing House as an editor. In June 1986, he entered the Wuhan Art Academy,
a professional creation organization and became a professional artist.
Having passed the national examinations, he entered Hubei Art Academy. He entered
in September 1987, majoring in oil painting and graduated in July 1989. In this
period, his creation "Fighting Against Japanese Army" was selected into
the "National High Level Art Institute Works Collection" and "Conquer
Berlin" was shown at the Seventh National Fine Art Exhibition.
In 1990, he changed his orientation to oil paintings. Since then, his work was
shown in the national fine art exhibitions fre-quently. These include, the First
Chinese Oil Paintings Annual Exhibition, Contemporary Chinese Oil Paintings Exhibition
1992, Chinese Oil Paintings Annual Exhibition 1993, the Third National Sports
Art Exhibition, the Eighth National Fine Art Exhibition, the Second Chinese Oil
Paintings Exhibition, the Fourth National Sports Art Exhibition, as well as Contemporary
Oil Paintings Exhibition of China on Hong Kongs Return. Among those
works, "Longing for the Soccer Field" won the Third Class Award at the
Fourth National Sports Art Exhibi-tion. "Colorful World" won the Excellent
Works of the Eighth National Fine Art Exhibition and was selected for the crucial
exhibition in Japan as a piece of work in "Album of Contemporary Chinese
Art Exhibition". In 1995, he became a member of the Association of Artists
of China. Mr. Shen held three one-man shows in Hong Kong respectively
in 1995, 1998 and 2000. More than 70 pieces of oil paintings which included three
themes. Countryside people, painters and "Red Guards" were exhibited.
The works were highly praised and have been purchased by collectors from Europe,
America and Australia. In September 2000, "Paper Boat", an
oil painting, was purchased by "The Contemporary Chinese Art (1979 -
1999)", a large-scale artistic album, as one of the most creative and significant
excellent works since Chi-nese Reform and the Open Policy was implemented. It
is edited by the Central Art Academy, a Chinese authoritative artistic institution,
the Association of Artists of China, Academy of Chinese Paintings and the Chinese
Art Academy. At the present time, Mr. Hanwu Shen is a professional artist
of the Wuhan Art Acad-emy and is listed as a National Grade One Artist.
